I saw Ms Morrison supporting Lene Lovich last year and bought this cd at the gig. At first we weren’t taking much notice of her but we were very quickly drawn into her dramatic mini-worlds. There isn’t really much to compare her to (a female Klaus Nomi comes close) as she’s out there beyond and between genres, dragging you along with often mad skirmishes on the violin and her amazing neo-operatic voice. She’s spell-binding, like finding a gypsy queen sharpening her music skills and enchanting intrepid travellers with them in a deep Balkan forest. Magic.

‘She Walks in Beauty’ opens the set here with its hypnotic percussion and Morrison enticing you in with that voice. ‘Kubla Khan’ has her high-soprano-ing over more watchmaker’s percussion and the gypsy violin. ‘Dream Within a Dream’ is a haunting piece in which her glockenspiel is never far from front of the mix. ‘Salaviei’ wouldn’t have been out of place in an Edwardian drawing room though perhaps with Pan peeping from behind a curtain to remind her/us of the debt owed to the sylvan people. ‘The Tyger’, as you may have guessed, is a romp with Blake’s striped feline.

I won’t go on but suffice it to say that Kirsten Morrison was one of the best finds of last year.

I’m very lucky to have heard Kirsten live and am thrilled that I can now purchase her CD! Kirsten is a hugely talented singer, composer, violinist, keyboard player and musician. She does not follow the pack and if you want to listen to something unique, interesting and beautiful, I would highly recommend this CD.
