If there is one thing the Victorians knew, it's how to have a fancy event. The 19th century is known for it's extravagant balls with lots of classical dancing. And on an evening like that, off course you need to look your best, in a wonderful ball gown.

This ball gown is based on a design from 1860. It is made from a cotton voile, which gives the dress a lovely light and fluffy look. The bodice is boned and and has a big “Bertha Collar”, a wide v-shaped collar which was very popular in the 1850's and 60's. The dress is trimmed with lace and three silk rosettes.

This white dress with silk details would be perfect for any fancy Victorian event, but it would also make a wonderful wedding dress.

The dress will be made to size, so when ordering, enter your bust, waist and hip measurements. These measurements should be taken over the undergarments which you are planning to wear with this outfit. It is made specifically to go over the 1860's corset and the round crinoline. If you have different foundation garments which you wish to wear this dress with, please let me know, and take extra care while measuring, so we can assure a good fit.

How historically accurate is this outfit?

Design: This dress is based on an extant dress from 1860. It follows the original dress quite closely. The wide crinoline skirt, boned bodice and wide neck betha collar are all typical of the era.

Materials: The Dress is primarily made in a cotton, which was a common fabric in the middle of the 19th century. The bows on the dress are made of silk, which was also used a lot in the evening fashions of the era. The only fabric that is not historically accurate is the nylon lace that is used to trim the collar. In the 19th century this would have been cotton or linen, as nylon had not been invented yet. However, cotton or linen lace, handmade in the fine quality of the 19th century is pretty much unavailable to us these days, so I substituted nylon.

Techniques: The dress is primarily sewn by machine. The sewing machine had already been invented at this time and had made it's way into the ready made clothing industry, A lot of work, especially on custom and fine garments, would have been primarily done by hand. In this dress the machine sewing is only done on the inside, so it is not visible when worn, and the dress is finished by hand, as it would have been in the 19th century.

Time Period: This style of dress is typical of the mid-Victorian era, specifically between 1855 and 1865.
