Flotsam (Peridot Shift Book 1)

A fantastical steampunk first contact novel that ties together high magic, high technology, and bold characters to create a story you won’t soon forget.

Captain Talis just wants to keep her airship crew from starving, and maybe scrape up enough cash for some badly needed repairs. When an anonymous client offers a small fortune to root through a pile of atmospheric wreckage, it seems like an easy payday. The job yields an ancient ring, a forbidden secret, and a host of deadly enemies.

Now on the run from cultists with powerful allies, Talis needs to unload the ring as quickly as possible. Her desperate search for a buyer and the fallout from her discovery leads to a planetary battle between a secret society, alien forces, and even the gods themselves.

Talis and her crew have just one desperate chance to make things right before their potential big score destroys them all.

interesting world, odd characters, exciting incidents, good plot…but lacks the energizing pull, the need to find out what happens next…maybe because there is too much: “and then he said, and then she did”…instead of dialogue? too un-engaging, in spite of everything else being good…i skimmed a lot…weird…should have been more gripping…but failed to grab me…lots of random slayings, killings, accidents, shipwreck, dastardly betrayals, complicated relationships to gods, aliens and friends, trouble and strife on every page…maybe too much conflict and too much distance to the horrors? should/could have had more impact…reminded me a lot of the “paladin caper” texts, but without the humour, banter and irony… the plot was similar to the “soul drinker” series, by jo clayton…i am sorry…there is a really fascinating world in there, with intriguing characters…they need some energizing vitamins….or something…maybe a different literary technique? …too bad, this is almost really good…just a little spark?

Reading the summary for this book I thought it would be a light hearted fun romp. It isn’t. I found it quite a serious book, but it is clever with some original ideas. Once I’d adjusted from what I thought the book would be to what it was, I really enjoyed it. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Great paced book. I’m liking the characters and plot line. Already recommended the book before I’d got a third of the way through. I’m ready for book two.
