Heroes, Villains and Fiends: A Companion for In Her Majesty’s Name (Osprey Wargames)

It is 1895 and the future depends not upon the actions of governments but upon those of the Adventuring Companies, and will be shaped by countless engagements in city streets, ancient ruins, dense jungles, high mountains and boundless deserts. In America, good men fight to preserve their hard-won liberty and the great drive west is stalled by Native American mystics and powerful outlaw gangs. In Africa, native forces fight to push back the Pax Britannica – no longer is a Lee-Metford rifle and a disciplined resolve enough to put the foe to flight. In Europe, darkness gathers around the Austro-Hungarian court and the Great Powers watch warily, knowing its fall could precipitate a war to end all wars. Heroes, Villains and Fiends presents new Companies, from the rebellious Zulu and Apache to the spies of the Okhrana and Secret Service, and the mysterious forces of such groups as the Knights Templar and the sinister Hellfire Club. With equipment, Talents and Mystical Powers, additional scenarios and a sample campaign, Heroes, Villains and Fiends opens up new possibilities for In Her Majesty’s Name.

This is a well-crafted addition to the earlier IHMN rulebook. A quick word of warning: it’s text and tables throughout with almost nothing else so if you were after more lavish photos of well painted figures, you will need to look elsewhere.

But – you should still get this book if you are a fan of the main game.

There’s some clever additions here to add further character and depth to the game. There’s some helpful clarifications too, useful new content to help you get designing your own companies and forces, and a general broadening of the ‘world’ of IHMN, but still done in that non-codex way that allows you to decide the background and context.

How refreshing is that? An expansion that doesn’t railroad you – the player – into having to re-buy all the basic product. Well recommended.

I bought this with the main rulebook – In Her Majesty’s Name, and have found it adds extra detail to the rules, although I have not played a game yet. This book adds rules for swimming, as well as extra companies (the bands of characters in the game), it also adds a bestiary of both real and fantasy creatures.

So I highly recommend this in combination with the main rules. I haven’t given a 5 star review as without playing the game I would find it a bit of a contentious point to say absolutely go for it.

Of course, they may be differing opinions to me.

Having this on my Kindle allows me to take it with me to friends and clubs. It’s nice to see this type of publication ( Wargame rules and supplements) in a format that allows me to have them all together on one mobile device instead of having to lug around a box full of books
