Patterns in the Dark (Dragon Blood Book 4)

Everyone knows dragons have been extinct for over a thousand years. Everyone is wrong. At least one dragon remains, and military scientists from the Cofah Empire are experimenting with its blood, using the magical substance to power deadly new weapons that could be used to bring the world to its knees.

That’s a concern for Zirkander, Cas, and the rest of the Iskandians, but all Tolemek wants is to find his missing sister. The last time he saw her, their father had locked her in an asylum because of a mental illness with no cure. Now the military has taken her. What use the Cofah have for her, Tolemek can only guess, but he is certain she is in danger. He must save her before it’s too late. But her fate is inexplicably tied to the dragon’s, and he must find it to find her.

Too short, much too short – another great book in this new series, 23 Dec. 2014

I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

So, this is very much a continuation of the previous book. Whereas books 1 and 2 were traditional (!) boy meets girl type fantasy books with the characters loosely connected this book and the last are more ensemble pieces involving the quartet (and the sword) which can take a bit of getting used to, mentally speaking.

Anyway, Tolemek is still looking for his sister and Zirkander is looking for the source of the Dragon blood they found in the last book.

This book reads like a cross between an Indiana Jones book and the Librarian TV series. Think tribes of blood-thirsty warriors attacking in the jungle, strange hybrid creatures trying to kill/eat our heroes and similarly blood-thirsty pirates chasing our heroes.

Also we meet Zirkander’s father – very similar to Indian

a Jones’ father in many ways.

As always there are some great lines – one of my favourites star

ts “Anyone else disturbed by the people eating brains?”

My only complaint? Too short, way too short, way way too short.

Here there be dragons . . . . . . Well, I’m not normally one for reviews but I accidentally discovered Lindsay Buroker’s ‘Dragon Blood’ series via a ‘freeby’ book two weeks ago. Since then, I’ve raided the piggy bank and thundered through all of the current books in the series and am now waiting for more, which speaks volumes in itself. I haven’t enjoyed a series this much since Melanie Rawn and her epics with the Sun-Runners. In the latest volume, Lindsay rolls out the ‘stars’ of previous book so we have a hero, a heroine (who’s also a sorceress!), a dragon, a pirate, a petite female with attitude (sniper trained) and a cast of supporting characters that you can’t help but empathize with. There’s also a roller coaster ride of a plot with more twists and turns than a badly designed American intersection, oh, and did I mention the dragon? All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable romp, bring on the next installment!

The gangs all back and this book follows fast on the heels of Book 3.

With Lindsay Buroker’s typical strong leading ladies even if one is a magic sw

ord and supporting hunky male counterparts the characters and story line continues to develop in this steam punk world.

Ridge’s Dad is a little too close to Dr Jones senior in the Indiana Jones Films for me but as yet ha

s only plaid a small part and may or may not feature again.

The search for the source of the Dragons Blood and Death Maker’s Sister continues apace I won’

;t say any more and spoil the story. Apart from to say there’s more Pirates, Magic, Flying machines and developing relationships between the characters. Now if only they can find a friend for Duck!
