DESCRIPTION:
This is a very RARE and amazing pair of gorgeous WELSH vintage Steampunk driving goggles. The unique feature of these goggles is obviously the outrageous AMBER TINTED LENSES.
Antique Amber goggles are extremely hard to find, and are sought after by all who must own an amazing piece of American manufacturing from the zenith of the driving goggles era, when cars were new and your accessories were as important as your car. And those who seek them out know that WELSH is the Cadillac – the Gold Standard – of tinted goggles. This is precisely that rarest of birds, the Amber tinted Welsh driving goggles, in mint condition.
The quality of these glasses is evident in the sturdy, durable frames. The bridge piece even has an etched scroll design that is unlike anything being manufactured today. Beautiful attention to detail. They have mesh side shields and removable double magnifier loupes have been added for an over-the-top Steampunk look. Some people choose to attach the magnifying loupes permanently, but we’ll leave this up to you.
CONDITION:
LENSES:
The condition of these goggles is quite excellent. The amber – yellow tinted lenses are in LIKE-NEW CONDITION, with no discernible flaws that I could detect. There may be an occasional microscopic pit I may have missed, but completely indiscernible to the naked eye, but the glass looks flawless to me. Certainly an exceptional example for goggles that are some 80 to 100 years old. We see this all the time in vintage goggles but literally have absolutely no affect on the use of the goggles. That is the case here. When wearing these goggles I looked for any spot, trying to catch it in the light or see a glimpse of it in any way but could not. If it’s there, but it doesn’t affect anything and I cannot find anything wrong with this exquisite pair! They are in mint condition.
Here at EDMDesigns we articulate any flaw we can find, so you know what you are getting and there are no surprises or disappointments when the open box is in your hands. Other sellers simply tell you to look at the pictures, but what about the things you can’t see in the photos? With no description it’s a crap shoot. With us it’s a sure thing.
FRAMES:
The frames are also in excellent gleaming condition. There are no structural flaws to these sturdy and impressive frames – they are solid and look like they could take a serious beating. They are gleaming chrome, with minimal normal wear that you might expect from a century-old pair of goggles. But mostly it’s just nice shiny chrome. Also, the nose rests are really nice with authentic Bakelite nose pads in original perfect condition. They feel very solid and are smooth and comfortable. I think I could wear these goggles all day with perfect comfort.
SIDE SHIELDS:
The mesh side shields are quite fabulous. They frames of the side shields are strong in their original shape from when they were made. This is an amazing stroke of luck to find antique goggles that are right about one hundred years old and find the side shields are “almost like new”. The mesh inside the frames of the side shields is also in the same shape as when it was made. They are excellent, no holes or tears and no mesh peaking up over the edge of the frames that hold it in place. The mesh is mostly gleaming, with some patchiness of slightly darker spots where a little age has set in. Again, that is being extraordinarily picky, as anyone else would say these side shields are awesome – and they are – but everything we see we put in our description. What is universally true is that this is certainly a beautiful specimen by anyone’s standards.
EARPIECES – ARMS:
The earpieces are also in excellent condition. Straight and firm, they have a brown coating for extra comfort and durability. These arms are designed to wrap around your ears with a section of flexible an easily adjustable springy ends. This is by far my favorite design, as when I’m wearing one of my most prized possessions I want to know that I can do cartwheels and back-flips without my precious goggles falling off. The springy ends make sure that these ear pieces are comfortable and instantly adjust to your exact proportions, and the wrap-around design ensures that these will never fall or fly off or go dropping in the water when you bend over to check your reflection.
As stated, the rarity, quality and condition of these goggles is something to truly be desired. Previous listings of these goggles have only lasted days before being purchased. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to have some of the most gorgeous goggles available anywhere, and the impeccable Welsh name that puts them at the absolute apex of antique tinted goggles. They look absolutely fantastic when being worn and they make even the cloudiest London afternoon into a bright sunny day! This is an absolute topper to any Steampunk wardrobe.
MEASUREMENTS:
The goggles measure right about 5 – 3/8 inches (133mm) wide from hinge to hinge and the lenses measure approximately 1-7/8 inches (49mm) high – including the frames. The arms measure about 5 inches (130mm) from the hinge to the back of the curve – but that is an arbitrary measurement because the part that wraps around your ears is flexible and can expand to virtually any dimension.
