DESCRIPTION:
Here is a fantastic pair of Steampunk goggles by AMERICAN OPTICAL . These are great vintage driving goggles. They come with removable double magnifier loupes for an over-the-top Steampunk look. Some people choose to attach the magnifying loupes permanently, but we'll leave this up to you. This stunning pair features green tinted lenses and medium brown leather side shields. And this pair comes from American Optical, from a day when things were manufactured here in America, with pride and an uncompromising quest for superior quality. This is easily evidenced from the rock-solid frames, thick impenetrable glass and focused attention to detail.
CONDITION:
LENSES:
This pair dates back easily 80-100 years but still look brilliantly beautiful. The lenses are in FINE CONDITION and I don't believe these have seen much wear. We came across this exquisite pair in an estate lot and knew these were an absolutely awesome find. These were definitely a pair of road warriors, and whoever got to wear these, the few times they did, got a super thrill and many admiring looks. EVERYTHING about them screams Steampunk from a long ago era.
FRAMES:
The frames on this pair of goggles are in very respectable condition, with minimal signs of wear. There frames are strong as the day they came out of American Optical's factory. The nose bridge is perfectly comfortable and the "AO Co." insignia is stamped on the top cross bar. They look STUNNING.
SIDE SHIELDS:
You know that the forces of nature were kind when you look at a pair of these antique goggles and see that the leather is not only intact, but in near MINT condition a full century later. The leather is slightly creased from the goggles being folded in the closed position for many, many years, but that is to be expected, since they were rarely used. The leather is soft and incredibly flexible, ensuring you perhaps another century of enjoyment. Tanned in a rich, medium brown, these scream of authentic Steampunk.
EARPIECES – ARMS:
After you handle as many pairs of these goggles as we have, you begin to take for granted their astounding manufacturing quality, which is surprising since the computer screen in front of my face could break at any moment at which point I would throw it out and get another one. The juxtaposition is almost laughable. Yet here are these goggles that have lasted more than twice my lifetime and I am proud to offer them to someone else so they can CONTINUE their life. Where did things go wrong… Anyway, enough pontificating, the earpieces are incredibly strong and are attached to equally strong and beautiful frames. They coated the earpieces so that they would last, and they did. Plus it makes them more comfortable. Then someone said, "hey, what if the coating starts to slide off?" So they manufactured a small bead of metal on the ends of the earpieces, which surely made it extra hard to get the coating on them, but they did it anyway and guess what? The coating didn't slide down and it is still here today as a testament to what happens when you care about quality. In short, the earpieces rock, just like everything else about these goggles GORGEOUS!
MEASUREMENTS:
The goggles measure approximately (5 5/8th inches) 140mm wide from hinge to hinge and the lenses measure approximately (2 1/8th inches) 52mm high, including the frames – please consider the dimensions when selecting any pair of goggles, and if you have a question please don't hesitate to ask.
