An Airship from Ashes (A Clockwork War Book 2)
Imagine Queen Elizabeth I never ruled.
England and Scotland never unified.
It’s 1845 and the two countries are once more at war.
The deadly war between England and Scotland rages on, with England placed in peril when powerful Duke Murgatroyd turns traitor, helping the Scots to annihilate London, and more shockingly, kidnap the king!
Engineer Clara Lissing is determined to launch a rescue mission. She joins forces with the king’s cousin, Gordy, constructing an airship from the ashes of a Scottish machine to sneak across the border and battle their enemies.
The pair quickly learn that enemies abound, and not just in Scotland. The most dangerous part of the mission just might be deciding who they can trust. Can they get close enough to save the king? Or will the murderous Murgatroyd strike again?
Glorious setting, phenomenal characterisation and breathtaking ingenuity,
Rarely have I enjoyed absolutely everything about a series, and I had no idea how much fun steampunk could be. Clara and Gordy feel like real people to me – so much, I’m wondering if Clara is a daughter I never knew I had. It’s hard to rave about this story without giving huge plot spoilers, but I never realised how clockwork spiders, dirigibles and the undead could share a story with princesses, cybermen and Scotland’s finest. I swear this would make an awesome Dr Who episode (or three).
Ms Haye has made it into my top 10 authors of all time, rubbing shoulders with the likes of JKR, Suzanne Collins, Cornelia Funke and Stephen King.
Who knew steampunk could be this good?,
