Steampunk (eBook): Fantasy Art, Fashion, Fiction & The Movies (Gothic Dreams)

An incredible illustrated ebook in the Gothic Dreams series, for iPad and Kobo. Imagine a world where steam is the main source of power, but the attitudes are distinctly futuristic – the romance of the past meets the technology of the future. Steampunk is a subculture on the rise, an exciting mix of adventure and sci fi in a world full of cogs and rivets, goggles and corsets.

Influenced by the worlds created by H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, Steampunk has grown into a movement encompassing fashion, art, movies, literature and even music. Films such as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen catapulted steampunk to the big screen, whilst events have sprung up all over the world in which fans create magnificent costumes and put steampunk twists on modern devices. As you read this exciting new book, enjoy a stunning selection of artworks portraying the ecstatic fantasy of steam-powered worlds.

So I’d bought this while browsing for art books and had assumed it was mainly an art annual; actually it’s something different, it’s like a trail of bread crumbs leading you into the world of steampunk and showing you what it’s all about! It meanders through the literature which built the genre, the distinctive fashion and art style which comes with it, a different fun and anachronistic world view and picks out how the genre has found it’s way into various films and TV series. Really interesting!

The book is very nice in itself – well printed, good quality paper, nice cover – feels quality all round – especially nice if you get it on a deal. On every two page spread one full page will be an art item with some art being a two page spread and other smatterings of art snuck in throughout (as backgrounds, asides). There is literally nothing not-interesting about this.

The prose and discussion throughout is very relaxed but tells a good story of how steampunk came to be and where and how it’s influenced both subculture and popular culture. If you’re an author great ideas will abound from reading this, if you’re a reader there is an excellent who’s who of novels for the genre throughout.

So overall nice book.. very happy purchase 🙂

Quite a good book but a bit disappointing. Written in a trade mag style – good info on the origins of steam punk but the art work was merely okay. It is mainly just a long list of movies, books etc. which have steam punk motifs etc. I found this inadequate. It is a good basic introduction but not much else.

Steampunk? What’s that all about then? That was my question until I went to a comic convention recently and it had a special ‘steampunk’
section. I checked it out and was most interested. This book does just what it says on the tin. The book covers the rise and rise of the genre
coined ‘steampunk’. Think Victorian Britain as a science fiction type reality with steam the top dude {War Of The Worlds, Captain Nemo et al].
It’s all in here folks. Neat, sharp script and some truly fantastic artwork. Fiction, artwork, music, fashion and gatherings all covered. Recommended!
