This beautifully proportioned Mid Century dressing table has been hand painted in high quality coffee coloured matt paint, followed by a midsheen vellum colour. We then carefully hand painted and stencilled the ravens, crows and text in matt black. The whole thing was then roughly distressed, then waxed several times to a beautiful lustre.
The text is an excerpt from Edgar Allen Poe’s poem ‘The Raven’:
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,’ I said, `art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore –
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!’
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.’
The drawers, both inside and out, and the back of the unit have also been painted to match. The rear of the mirror has been painted matt black, so it still looks good should you want to place it in front of a window.
We have retained the original beautifully engineered brass knobs and ball bearing castors. The dresser itself was manufactured by M Davis and Sons of Sunderland, UK, is of great quality and very sturdy.
The drawers are lined with vintage Crown wallpaper in a soft cream stripe.
The adjustable, tilting mirror has some very slight ageing around the edges, as to be expected of a piece of this age, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance, and in my opinion just adds more character.
