DESCRIPTION:
We know that the more fantastic Steampunk goggles that we list the harder it is to choose because they are all so different and striking in their own way, and this pair is just going to further complicate the issue… This is a pair of STUNNING Steampunk goggles created from a genuine vintage pair of WELSH goggles. These are not some cheap reproduction pair – these are the real deal. If you are not familiar with the Welsh name, they were among the titans of American driving goggles and glasses manufacturers along with other legendary names such as Bausch & Lomb, American Optical, Cesco, Willson and a few others. All of these makers at their peak were vying for the new demand for stylish and sturdy driving goggles as Americans embraced the exciting technology of the automobile and Henry Ford created cars that were accessible to the masses. Competition among these goggle sellers was fierce, and as all good forms of capitalism should, this competition pushed manufacturers to offer the finest product in terms of style, functionality and quality. That is why you, who are looking at this listing at this moment, represent one of the few who have the insight to seek out these incredible gems from a bygone era. And the inherent quality of these vintage and antique pieces is the reason that some examples of these inspiring pieces can still be found.

Although you can't really go wrong with any of the major brands from this era, and so many times they matched each other's styles so closely that it can be hard to tell them apart, we will always have a soft spot for the Welsh brand. They were also the premier manufacturer of a particular pair of driving goggles with bright red tinted lenses that has become a favorite of ours and is one of the most in-demand pair of antique goggles within the Steampunk community. But whether looking at those legendary specs or this pair of incredibly unique Bakelite goggles, you can be sure that Welsh is going to supply you with only the finest quality. This is not a terribly complex design, nor does it need to be for this style, but what I love about them is that Welsh took the time to manufacture the frames from a gorgeous dark brown, super strong Bakelite. Finished with the Black screw-on lens caps and black perforated metal vents, the two-tone appearance is unexpectedly handsome.

Another noteworthy detail that you can't easily appreciate from the photos is that the inside edge of the frames is expertly molded to fit smoothly and snugly against your face with maximal comfort and no gaps. This is not an easy feat to accomplish with a rigid, immovable material, but Welsh executed this feature with enviable aplomb.

Yet another aspect of the design that can't be seen from the photos has to do with how the two halves of the goggles are joined. As you can see, there is a short length of ball chain that joins the left and right frame. In the middle of the ball chain there is some black rubber coating to protect both the chain and your nose should the chain ever touch. What cannot be seen is that after the chain passes through the frame into the interior of the goggles, it also passes through a small silver clip. This is to keep the ball chain from eventually wearing down the Bakelite and slipping out of the frames, which would make them useless. The clip presents a metal barrier to ensure that the ball chain stays put – forever! When is the last time a company actually WANTED to make a product that wouldn't break and you wouldn't have to replace in a few years? What's cool is that the other end of the silver clip can be positioned so that is rests against the inside of the lens so that it doesn't rattle around as you move. Pure genius. We have sold many pairs of goggles that use a bead chain and very few – if any – have had the metal clip used here.

Lastly, although we'll get into the specifics of the condition of these goggles, one of the most outstanding features of this genuine vintage pair is that they are in MINT, LIKE NEW CONDITION. Why provide such a long, detailed description for such a seemingly ordinary pair of goggles? Simply because you deserve to know what makes these goggles (and in many regards, all of our vintage and antique goggles) different from some similar looking reproduction pair. And that, in a nutshell, is the essence of Steampunk – paying tribute to an era when things were crafted with pride, built to last and represented the best in American ingenuity. While replicas are cheap, as they are made in China with noncompetitively cheap or often forced labor, you will get particular satisfaction from the small but distinct "MADE IN U.S.A." that is present on each frame.

CONDITION:

LENSES:
I am going to try to keep this portion short to compensate for the novella above, which should be easy because these goggles are perfect. The lenses are in brand new condition. They look as though they were just made. There is a small defect in the right lens, but the glass came that way and it is small and insignificant and nearly impossible to see. These lenses sparkle like a shiny new quarter.

FRAMES:
The frames, as mentioned, are a beautiful, rich, dark brown Bakelite that creates a striking two-tone look when paired with the black lens caps and black vents. Each "eye cup" is molded in such a way as to provide an unprecedented level of comfort and ensure that there are no gaps. As amazing a fit for Bakelite goggles as I've ever experienced.

Both halves are joined by a length of ball chain and a clip inside each eye cup keeps the ball chain from ever coming out – unless you move the clip in such a way as to intentionally allow you to remove the chain should you so desire. The clip also serves to hold the lenses securely in place. The frames are outfitted with well perforated metal vents that allows the goggles to breathe and gives them that unmistakable Steampunk look. The frames, the ball chain, the clips and the vents – all are in perfect condition, like brand new.

STRAP:
It can be particularly hard for an elastic strap to survive for 50 or 60 years and still have flexability, but because this pair of goggles does not appear to have ever been worn and seems to have spent their entire life inside the original box, the strap here is in perfect, like new condition. In fact, the more I write about these goggles, the more tempted I am to keep them. If you're thinking about a pair of genuine vintage goggles to complete your top-of-the-line Steampunk outfit, or if you want something utterly fine for tooling around on your Harley or vintage roadster, I'd recommend grabbing this pair before I change my mind and take them down…

MEASUREMENTS:
The goggles measure approximately 143mm wide from edge to edge and the lenses measure approximately 57mm high, including the frames – please consider the dimensions when selecting any pair of goggles, and if you have a question please don't hesitate to ask.

* Please remember that the lens caps can be unscrewed and the lenses can be swapped out with tinted lenses or any other lenses of your liking that have the appropriate dimensions.
